Recently, EFSA published a revised safety assessment on titanium dioxide (E 171), where it was concluded that titanium dioxide (E171) was considered unsafe to be used as a food additive. EU Member States support the ban announced by the Commission. However, opinions differ widely on the question of transition periods. While some Member States are calling for an immediate ban, others favor a certain transitional period to allow affected food business operators to change their formulations. A regulation proposal by the Commission is expected to be published in September 2021, which, without transition periods, can lead to a ban of titanium dioxide in food by the end of the year.
