After several Member States recently stated that they consider “probiotics” as a mandatory category term (for further reading on this topic, please click here), it was now time for Denmark to also follow this interpretation.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration thus allows the term probiotics as a mandatory category designation on food supplements. The term is only valid for food supplements that contain live lactic acid bacteria and/or bifidobacteria. Additional information such as “probiotic effect” or “contains probiotics” continues to be subject to the Claims Regulation.
It will be interesting to see which other country(ies) will follow this approach.
With our expertise in product development, regulatory consulting, and claim substantiation through clinical studies, we are ready to help you strengthen the value proposition of your probiotic product.
